Today is Friday, the last day of our first full week of service.  All the preparation we did during the first week and a half really paid off and Service Week 1 went very smoothly.  6 of the interns acted as assistant teachers in a local Peruvian school, Tambo de Gozo.  Mainly, they did one-on-one reading emphasizing pronunciation.    Usually they worked with kids that were above or below the class average so that the local teacher could teach more efficiently and those kids could get the individualized attention.

On Tuesday we had a very special excursion to Cusco.  We visited a ruin site that was not yet open to the public.  The ruins were still being restored and uncovered.  There is still a lot of Peruvian high jungle to tame.  Tyler made an apt metaphor when he said “this is like being in Machu Picchu in 1912”.

Today will be the 5th day of Strive center.  Attendance is booming and it seems even more popular than last year.  Yesterday we taught a English and Spanish lesson in Dental hygiene and handed out toothbrushes.  The children seemed highly interested, though I was initially skeptical, I think this was a very valuable endeavor and should be made annual.
