Aleza and Alie here, back again to update you on the second half of week 3 here in Pisaq, Peru. Saturday morning we all left the hostel for a destination long run to the neighboring town of Calca. Calca is a approximately 12 miles from our home in Pisaq. We were all excited for the opportunity to explore some uncharted territory. Some of us ran 9 miles and caught a bus to Calca, while others opted to add on additional distance, running a total of 14 miles. I (Aleza) being a collegiate swimmer from Wheaton College, MA, chose to bike alongside these dedicated runners. I rode with the 14 mile group acting as their Sherpa for the day. I carried team member’s money, sweatshirts, pants, Gatorade, and various other necessities. I also took on the role of personal DJ, playing upbeat tunes throughout the strenuous journey. Not being a runner, it was very cool being able to participate during the long run. After we all completed our run, we met up in Calca and explored the town in search of post long-run fuel.
We arrived back at the hostel in Pisaq just in time to watch the Olympic trial 10k track event. This event featured one of our very own past STRIVE interns, Marielle Hall. Marielle looked strong throughout the race securing her spot in the 2016 Olympic Games, finishing 3rd overall. The STRIVE Team has now graduated an Olympic qualifier, a US World Championship team member, D1 and D3 All-Americans, a sub-4-minute miler, and a high school Footlocker All- American. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the rest of our STRIVE family!
Alie and Aleza signing off. Hasta Lluego!
