First off, I apologize for the tardiness of content this past week. I’ve been in the US for the first time in 6 months and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. Between seeing friends and family, hosting a few awesome STRIVE events, appearing on NPR’s “Here and Now,” and finishing my fundraising run for the STRIVE Center, it’s be a crazy 10 days!

As I look at my return to our neighboring continent to the South, I’m also looking towards another big block of training which will essentially begin once I arrive back in Quito next week. But, before I move forward, I wanted to look back at this season and see what we could learn.

Below is the full calendar of my training from this season – mostly for all you running dorks out there. A quick explanation for interpretation:

The columns show the workout in morning, afternoon, then the “quality” (that is running at a quicker pace) for the day, and then the total mileage for the day. Because I’m torn between metric and English, the quality is measured in kilometers and the total mileage in miles. Sorry. One more note on mileage – the .01 added implies that the mileage represents the sum of two runs. That is – 14.01 is the sum of the days 8 and 6 mile runs. Days that don’t end in .01 are less common as almost every day had two runs.

In terms of terminology:

Bolded days are “quality days.” These feature races or fast running in a track or road workout.

Easy or Reg: An easy-paced recovery run. Used to promote recovery, develop aerobic capacity, and spend time on feet. Most runs.

Fartlek: A less structured speed workout involving running alternating fast and moderate paced segments.

“Magic” miles: These are a CSU staple – a workout run on the track with alternating 100m segments of sprinting and easy running.
