Weekly Summary – 93 miles in 13 runs. One day of travel to our new home in Cambridge, MA and then hit the ground running (almost literally). Extremely hot and humid which took some getting used to but felt pretty good running the first few days and had a very solid first fartlek on Saturday.

Lunes, 6 de Agosto, 2018 – AM: OFF – travel from LIM-FLL and then FLL-BOS. Very smooth sailing even w/ RP. He got progressively less anxious on each travel leg and was pretty quiet on the red-eye. Got some rest and US customs was no problem – super easy; they just looked at his paperwork and then waved us through. Made it to Boston by early afternoon and my folks picked me up from Logan where we went to see if we could find a mattress that day.
18:00: Finally had a few minutes to sneak a run in. It was 103F and humid. Somehow I actually felt pretty good – too much travel and it was good to be moving. Tried to run down to the river but got lost so just ran over to the track and did a few laps and strides. Pretty good first run considering the last 36 hours of travel (well, more like 5 days if you count the trek). Total run 5.2km in 20’.
Martes, 7 de Agosto, 2018 – 08:45: Ran out on the river and around Sci Museum loop to the track which was about 8km in 31’xx. Very hot again so probably a little over-eager. Planned to do 10km of 100/100 fartlek on the track but after doing drills and starting ran an 80 first lap (about what I ran in Pisaq) and decided to just do 1km (~3’20) and jog back. Total run 10km in 38’.
19:30: Ran late during busy day of moving. Legs felt good and was running quicker along the river. GPS pooped out at some point – not sure why – so pace was weird for the last 3km or so but mostly around 3’50s-4’00s. Finished at Mar’s parents’ house and did 4x strides on rd. Total run 13km++ in 54’.
XT: Moved a really heavy futon after running and felt kind of like I was going to pass out but then went and got an Anna’s super quesadilla so all was well.
Miercoles, 8 de Agosto, 2018 – 10am: Slept and ran late. Same river loop. Felt decent. Finished w/ 4x strides, 200m in 35. Total run 15.5km in 63’.
17:20: Out/back towards sci museum. Felt much better than AM and ran a lot quicker 3’40s. Finished w/ 4x strides on track. Total run 7.5km in 30’.
Jueves, 9 de Agosto, 2018 – 07:00: At NKRC in Vermont w/ Nick Roosa. Ran a very hilly trail circuit through the forests and meadows around here. Lovely run and great to chat w/ Nick about running, camps, and life. Beautiful morning. Extremely uneven pace due to hills and trails but great effort. Did 3x strides and then tacked on w/ Everett Hackett for another few km. Total run 14km- in 67’.
17:30: Ran in Concord from folks’ place. One slow km (4’40) and then quite quick for the whole run. 3’55->3’29. Stopped and did strides (4x) and then jogged back. Total run 10.2km in 39’.
Viernes, 10 de Agosto, 2018 – 10am: Slept late and ran later. Same loop on the river. Legs felt good and ran quicker down to 3’50s. Finished w/ 4x strides on track and 200m in 31.x. Total run 15km+ in 60’.
18:30: Ran easy out/back on river and then over to the track to finish up, 4x strides, and then up mass ave to buy some coronas because it’s a million degrees out. Total run 6km++ in 24’.
Sabado, 11 de Agosto, 2018 – Sparknotes: 10,000m of 100m on/100m off in 31’37.
08:00am: Nice day for a workout – cooler and cloudy, only in the low 70s. Warmed up 5km+ in 21’ and then drills, strides.
Workout was a Franklin Tenorio “first workout after something really hard or not working out for a while” – basically just magic mile for as long as you feel like running – i.e. strides 100m straights, float 100m curves. I did this workout several times in the last 8 months for anywhere from 5-10km. I figured 10km would be a good ceiling as that seemed like a lot to run on the track anyway.
I started out running clockwise – which, for some reason, makes my Garmin read accurately. When I run counter clockwise on the track (i.e. normal direction), it reads long on the track. Always. Interesting.
Anyway, I had tried to do this workout earlier in the week and had run the first lap in like 80.x which is about what I ran in Pisac, so canned it after only 1K. Today, I ran the first lap in 75 and the first km in about 3’10 and figured that was more like it.
Got into a great rhythm and splits were extremely even. A lot of 76s. Switched directions I think at 6km and ran the last 4km the regular way. Closed w/ the last 400m continuous at a good pace – I think 69 – but not crazy kicking.
Total was 31’37 for 10,000m (tiny negative split after 15’50 at 5K) – 3’09.x avg.
Very good running. For comparison, I did 8km of this in Quito at about 3’25 avg.
Pretty pleased overall. Also NB ran the whole workout in the Cavu (and warmup cooldown).
Cooled down short and home. Total run 18km
16:00: Ran back from Mariana’s folks’ house. Did this run in cut-off corduroy shorts and a dress shirt. Gotta get in the training when you’ve got the time! No residue from the AM session and ran quicker than expected – 4’15 down to 3’40s on the river. No strides, just straight home due to time constraints w/ Mrs. V’s birthday party in the evening. Total run 6km+ in 24’12.
Domingo, 12 de Agosto, 2018 – 09:30am: Ran w/ STRIVE Athletics HS gang in Concord. Started at Emerson and ran out/back on Battle Rd. Planned to do about 35-40km but rain and mud on battle rd led to some of the worst chafing I’ve ever had and actually had to cut my run short. Did about 18km w/ the HS kids quite slow ~ 4’15 avg and then tried to tack on (changed into a different pair of shorts Jon leant me) but didn’t help. So just finished w/ 2km on the track, something like, 80, 77, 73, 73, 73. Felt okay leg and breathing wise but literally bleeding from the inner thighs (this is chafing from where the shorts liner was rubbing). Not super fun. Total run 23km in 1h36.
17:00: Ran back from Mariana’s parents’ house after dropping the car off. Felt weirdly good for some reason and ran much quicker than expected. 4’13 first km and then 3’50, and the rest around 3’30. Nice to feel good and just let ‘er rip a bit. Finished w/ 4x strides on the track. Total run 6km+ in 22’.
XT: Glute med/toes
