What’s Goin’ On?

Cross country season is wrapping up with the end of November. We highlight a few impressive achievements from our alums in the past month! Read on for more.

STRIVE-Peru (‘14) alum Morgan Florsheim earned a spot to compete at the uber prestigious Footlocker High School Cross Country National Championship at Balboa Park in San Diego, CA. Only the top 40 runners in the country from 4 qualifying meets earn entry into the race, and Morgan earned her spot by finishing 10th in the Midwest Regional, running a time of 17’53. She’ll compete for a chance at the national title on December 13. Good luck, Morgan!

Morgan's training with STRIVE-Peru this summer has led her to the prestigious Footlocker National Championship Meet!

Paul Mcgovern (STRIVE-Peru, ‘14) finished the cross country season strong, racing at the Interschool Championship at Hotchkiss Academy. Paul, who runs for Phillips Andover Academy, finished in 17’00. The time earned him 11th place in the competitive race. We’ll be sure to check back in and see how the track season goes.

Reid Noch (STRIVE-Peru, ‘13 and ‘14 and STRIVE-Kenya, ‘14) ran a 16:55 in the CC Championships, good for an 8th place finish and the youngest runner in the top 15. Quite an accomplishment for our most veteran of STRIVE alums. We’re expecting big things for him in the upcoming years.

While our American alums are just finishing up cross country, our alums across the pond have already started racing on the track. STRIVE-Kenya (‘14) alum Brad Wattleworth ran his first track race of the year this month. Brad clocked 9’19 for 3000m (just under 5’00/mile) at ECCA Saucony English National Relay Championships where he finished 12th. We look forward to seeing more great results from Brad as the season goes on!

Thinking Ahead – 2015 is right around the corner!

2015 Applications continue to roll in and our programs are starting to fill up. Remember that signing up early guarantees you a spot in your first choice program. STRIVE alums can still take advantage of the discount for returners and we’ll even throw in a special “Thank You gift” for coming back for another summer. We hope to hear from many of you soon and want to remind everyone to use the holiday season to spend quality time with family and friends.

STRIVE Forward

STRIVE staff have been visiting high schools all over the country trying to recruit motivated, unique young people to join our programs in the summer of 2015. The family of Zach Munn (STRIVE-Kenya, ‘14) was gracious enough to host a STRIVE Info Session and we’ve been talking to students at Belmont, Brookline, Concord Academy, Middlesex, Pomfret and many more. Help us keep spreading the word to families and students who would enjoy becoming a part of the STRIVE family.

In particular, we’ve been looking for new candidates for the STRIVE Scholarships Program. Scholarships are still available for Summer 2015 and we are waiting for more exceptional candidates with a passion for service, athletics, and adventure. If you know a student who might be a good fit and could use financial assistance to make their STRIVE trip a reality, please encourage them to visit the STRIVE Scholarship page and  fill out an application.

If you’d like to support the STRIVE Scholarship Program, please donate at our fundraising page.

STRIVE also sponsored the Collegiate Meet for the second straight year in NYC. Many teams showed up, with the winning teams taking home custom made shirts provided free of charge courtesy of STRIVE. A big thank you to Collegiate Coach, George Calano, for letting us be a part of his meet and a huge congratulations to all the runners who gave us an inspirational example of hard work, dedication and teamwork.

The STRIVE College Intern Program
