What’s Goin’ On?

With the school year just getting underway, we caught up with a bunch of STRIVErs who are off doing awesome things – from traveling to the other side of the world to starting college cross country to killin’ it on the high school scene! Read on for more.

In an effort to keep everyone up to date, we’re going to be running a series of interviews with alums (in addition to these little monthly blurbs)! You can see the first post with Emma Langley (STRIVE-Peru, ‘12), who’s now competing on the world stage as a youth triathlete.  Our next post is an interview with Marielle Hall (STRIVE-Peru staff, ‘13), who just graduated from the University of Texas and signed a professional running contract with Nike after winning the NCAA Division 1 5000m title in June. Make sure to check back for this in depth look at Marielle’s incredible progression and recent performances.

2013 STRIVE-Peru group leader Marielle Hall had an incredible senior year of running at the University of Texas, culminating in a victory at the NCAA championships in the 5000m. Check out the blog for an in-depth interview with Marielle coming soon!

Eli Waxler (STRIVE-Kenya, ‘14) ended up with a big W and a big PR at the Somers Big Red Invitational. Eli ran a blazing 16:34, more than 30 seconds faster than his 5k time time in the State Championships last year. Congrats, Eli! We’ll be sure to check in for more.

We caught up with Liam Wall (STRIVE-Peru, ‘13) who’s applying for the 2015 STRIVE College Intern Program. Liam is continuing his STRIVE-inspired, world traveling this year, as he spends the Fall on the other side of the world in Tokyo, Japan. “Tokyo is just a tad busier than Pisac,” he told us. “I’m in a homestay program, though, so that means there’s practically unlimited home cooked meals. No better way to refuel!” Despite being in a busy city, Liam is still logging 20+ mile long runs, so it sounds like he’s earning those home-cooked meals!

Two STRIVErs and teammates at Belmont High School in Belmont, MA, Ari Silverfine (STRIVE-Peru, ‘14) and Noah Miller-Medzon (STRIVE-Peru, ‘13 and STRIVE-Kenya, ‘14), have been tearing up the cross country circuit so far this fall. In the first race of the season, Ari crossed the line first in what was also his first ever cross country race! Noah finished just behind in a tight pack of BHS runners who swept the top 5 spots. We’ll be sure to see more as the season progresses.

STRIVE Forward

In other STRIVE news, the service work put in by 2014 STRIVErs this past summer continues to provide life-changing experiences even after our groups have left. STRIVE scholarship recipients from Iten, have recently enrolled in University with their tuition costs covered by a STRIVE Scholarship Fund set up by our 2014 Kenya crew. We hope to have continued updates about their experiences in University throughout the year.

For prospective STRIVErs, we will once again be providing scholarships of our own for 2015 programs to families from around the world a chance to take part in such an amazing experience. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship or know someone who might be a good applicant, please visit our STRIVE Scholarship Program page (LINK). We hope to continue to grow our scholarship program each year and look to the STRIVE community to help us meet our goals. If you’d like to support the STRIVE Scholarship Program, please donate at our fundraising page (LINK). Thanks to all our applicants, participants and supporters. You are what makes STRIVE special.

The STRIVE College Intern Program

Calling our college interns. STRIVE has introduced our pilot program for college interns in Kenya. We are excited to offer the same STRIVE experience that interns have been enjoying the past 2 years in Peru. If you are up for a summer of community service, mentoring, athletics and fun then reserve a spot now as a STRIVE college intern. Spacing is limited in both locations and applications are available now. STRIVE College Interns are accepted on a rolling basis and will remain open until all spots have been filled. We look forward to meeting each and every one of your this summer. If you’ve been a STRIVE intern before, ask about discounted pricing for STRIVE intern alums.

College interns have it all – amazing training opportunities, real-life service work, a valuable internship working with teens, and incredible cultural immersion in one of the most beautiful places on Earth!
