There are numerous community outreach and travel programs that exist for high school student-athletes to choose from, but at STRIVE, we are rooted in the belief that international travel, community service and athletics need not be mutually exclusive but rather complement each other. We offer athletes of all levels the opportunity to engage in life-changing experiences that others are having without sacrificing fitness or training.
In order to paint the best picture of the STRIVE experience, we thought we’d highlight some takeaways from two former participants:
Aaron Rubin
Went to Peru and Kenya with STRIVE Trips as a high school student and was a college intern for the Kenya trip.
Laurel Sheffield
Went to Peru with STRIVE Trips as a high school student and again as a college intern.
Aaron on his favorite part of his trip with STRIVE:
“When thinking about my time as a student with STRIVE, one thing that I was really impressed with was how good of a job the company did with immersing students into the culture of the local communities, which I think is an integral component of the best travel experiences.
Exploring the town in small groups with a reasonable degree of freedom, the knowledge that the group leaders have about the two countries, and the strong connections through service work that STRIVE has developed with locals in both Iten (Kenya) and Pisac (Peru) make for a very authentic and intimate travel experience.
The best memory I hold from my trip to Peru is the scenic trek to Machu Picchu while getting to run and meet olympian and some of the greatest runners in the world is one of my favorite parts about Iten.”
Laurel on recommending STRIVE trips to other students and why:
“I would most definitely recommend STRIVE! It is an especially excellent opportunity for other runners, but it would be an amazing experience regardless of your athletic pursuits. While Peru itself was amazing and beautiful, the people on the trip, though, were what truly made my experience so wonderful.
The trip leaders are enthusiastic and caring and all-around great people, and, in my experience, so are the other campers. It’s always great to be surrounded by people who are equally passionate about running and understand the daily grind and dedication that success requires!”
