While our time in Pisac is drawing to an end, the interns are reflecting upon their last 44 days here, and the high schoolers have reached the mid-point of their three-week adventure. Here’s what we have been up to so far this week:
This week diverged from the ordinary in that today, Thursday, is Peruvian Independence Day. School schedules have been crazy as a result; and unfortunately Tuesday was our last day teaching at Divino. The faculty prepared an elaborate breakfast to show us their appreciation: we enjoyed a cheesy quinoa and potato dish, with a side of rice. It was delicious!
Due to Peruvian Independence Day, we only opened the doors to the STRIVE Center on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Despite the festivities, there were a number of students happily willing to learn English! With the addition of the high-schoolers, it is generally possible for us to tutor students one-on-one to ensure that each student receives individual instruction. From my observations, the students seem more receptive and energetic when offered personal attention.
On Wednesday, our group split up to perform two projects of community service. The male interns and Alejandro went to build a house in the highlands; meanwhile the female interns, high-schoolers, and staff prepared a soccer field in a nearby community. Although the work was physically demanding, it was rewarding to see our efforts make a direct impact.
‘Free day’ is a phrase not common to STRIVErs, and the opportunity to have a free day today was much appreciated! After enjoying a later start to the morning run, we observed the Independence Day festivities while brunching on pancakes. Although Divino offered us a position with them in their marching lineup, we declined so that we could spend the afternoon hiking. Our hike led us to this incredible waterfall, and allowed us incredible views of the Sacred Valley. Take a look:
Tomorrow, we will be preparing for el día deportivo (athletics day)! On Saturday, the entire Pisac community is invited to participate in a field day-esque celebration, complete with age-appropriate competition (including prizes!), in addition to free lunch. We are very optimistic for a large turnout, as we have been mentioning this day in our classes for weeks. Check back this weekend for a full report!
