Weekly Summary – 50 miles in 4 days (8 runs). Surprisingly good recovery from the huge effort last weekend at Project CarbonX. Took 3 full days off and then 3 days of jogging before attempting a light workout on Saturday which went surprisingly well. Hoping to bounce back and have a good one in Vermont — less than 2 weeks to go! Head down!

One more thing – for all my local Greater-Boston readers – if you’re an athlete looking for an exceptional sports-massage therapist who specializes in runners and injury prevention and recovery, go visit Sam Peck at SoarBody Theraputics in Davis Square (Somerville). He was crucial to helping me recover from my injury during the fall and I’m looking forward to working w/ him again to keep me healthy now that I’m back in town!

Lunes, 6 de Mayo, 2019 – AM: OFF – pretty smooth travels back from SFO to BOS. Really grateful to have the lie-flat seat but the flight is short this way (only 5h15) so you can only get so much sleep. Got my bag easily and then made it home by about 08:00. Passed out on the bed in my clothes for many an hour and a half. Did a bunch of house-work, organizing and unpacking, etc.

Spent an hour on the treadmill walking desk at 2mph and 5% incline while catching up on work. That felt pretty good.

Walked to the T and then went to MGH for my annual pedi-hem-onc check-in. Nice to see folks there and get blood tested.

Walked/T back and grabbed some groceries and sushi and then hung around at home all afternoon. Had a (couple) Hakushu and then began to get extremely tired around 19:30 and passed out around 20:00.

Martes, 7 de Mayo, 2019 – AM: Slept for 12+ hours last night.

Lazy morning and then used the treadmill walking desk for about an hour catching up on work/calls.

Legs are feeling MUCH better today — can stand up from the toilet without using my arms!

11:15am: Jogged 10’ total to the T and then to Sam Peck at SoarBody for massage. Great session and really helped. Felt much better afterward and walked back.

16:00: Easy 60’ on elliptical machine (in heavy sweats). Nice to get the HR up and legs felt good moving w/ no impact. Kept res fairly low and increased a bit in the last 10’ which got HR up into the 170s. Felt nice. Good stretch after. Total 60’.

XT: Heel drops, toes.

Miercoles, 8 de Mayo, 2019 – 08:30: Slept well again and went out to jog on the grass. Did 4 big laps and then to the track and did 3km+ barefoot. From 5’00 down to 4’20ish overall. Felt pretty decent. No drills/strides, just put shoes on and jogged to TJ’s to finish. Total run 9km+ in 42’30.

XT: Heel drops, toes.

15:30: Jogged down Mass Ave to the post office and then back to the fields. Did 3km+ barefoot. Nice day but allergies are awful right now. Bought some allegra which I hope will help. Jogging felt good, 4’20s. Did barefoot drills on turf but no strides, jogged back. Total run 6km++ (GPS was all fucked up the first 2km on mass ave) in 29’30.

XT: Heel drops, toes.

Jueves, 9 de Mayo, 2019 – 08:30: Slept pretty poorly – trouble falling asleep maybe due to my unplanned very long benadryl induced nap yesterday afternoon. Ran solo on short Chuck loop. Felt decent. Cooler, only about 50F but sunny, and overdressed a lot, HR was very high 160s second half. Stopped at track and did drills and 4x strides in 1’24 — not bad for this close to the race. Jogged about 5’ barefoot and then home. Total run 10km+ in 45’.

XT: Shoulder pulls, heel drops, toes, glutes (10x, 10x weights), bird dogs

14:00: Ran earlier after interview w/ Inside Tracker team. Walked to the track and changed into running clothes and did the whole run there — about 5.5km barefoot on the turf and then drills, 4x strides in 1’19.8 (!) – very surprised to see strides this quick. Legs felt pretty decent. Warm again and sunny and overdressed a lot. Things are looking all right. Total run 6km in 26’.

XT: Heel drops, toes.

Viernes, 10 de Mayo, 2019 – 09:30: Ran late after spending the morning with Mar since I barely saw her all week. Easy run on Sci Museum. Legs actually felt quite decent; overall energy level still not perfect but hard to tell if that’s from all the extra layers getting my HR up or still leftovers from Saturday’s race. Did one loop on the grass for 9km in 39’ and then stopped and did drills and then 6x strides in 2’02 and 200m in 32.x. Not bad! Total run 10km+ in 42’.

XT: Heel drops, toes.

16:00: Walked over to MIT w/ Mar and then jogged to the fields. Had to stop right as I got to the grass and high-tail it to the bathroom, felt better and jogged about 5km on the fields before coming back, using the bathroom again, and then doing drills, had to use the bathroom again, and did about 80% of one stride before calling it. Not sure if it was something weird I ate or what but GI system was very displeased. Lucky to have that bathroom at the track open again. Total run 5.5km in 24’.

Sabado, 11 de Mayo, 2019 – Sparknotes: 5000m fartlek in 15’17 w/ 100m strides, 100m float. Surprisingly good!

09:30am: First quicker running this morning after legs felt fairly decent for the last 2 days and strides have been feeling good. Had a fun night with B, David, Z, and Mar, but drank way too much Scotch and ate a lot of ice cream and stayed up until like 02:00. Woke up around 08:00 feeling awful and didn’t even want to get out of bed but had to meet the VC for lunch, so got myself up, had some coffee, and then Dave and I headed out to run.

Beautiful day — 60s and sunny and a moderate breeze. We jogged over to the fields and ran a very easy 4km+ together and then headed to the track. Stopped and did drills and then only 2x strides and got into it.

Plan was to do 5km of 100m on/100m off fartlek — a Franklin Tenorio classic. David would do one 100m per lap and jog back. It was a bit windy on the home stretch so figured it might be nice to have him for those reps.

Split my watch each lap and was surprisingly consistent and quick. First lap was 73 but figured that would slow down a bit but then ran 74, 73, 73 for 4’55 first 1600m and then was very consistent (9’49 through 3200m). Never really got any harder, felt quite relaxed overall. Dave didn’t really let me draft, but it was nice to have him as an excuse not to dog it once a lap. Finished w/ the quickest lap, 70.x for 15’17.

This is by far the fastest I’ve done this workout and kind of amazing w/ only 1 week post 58km. I think things are looking good for VCM!

Cooled down short on the grass and then out to the Chuck for a very slow loop w/ Dave. Total run 11.5km.

15:30: Easy run solo on the river out/back to the BU bridge and back. Finished up at the track and did drills and 4x strides in 1’20 – good! Didn’t feel the morning at all. Had to take an absolutely emergency pit stop next to the train tracks like 100m from home – jesus – but luckily didn’t get arrested. Total run 6km+ in 25’30.

XT: Heel drops, toes.

Domingo, 12 de Mayo, 2019 – 10:30am: Slept very late, needed that after the late night on Friday. Ran solo on sci museum. Miserable day, 40s and rain. Love Boston! How many more months??

Stopped at the track and did drills and 4x strides in 1’20. Legs felt good. Easy home. Total run 9km in 38’.

XT: Heel drops, toes.

17:00: Lost track of time this afternoon so ran later. Still awful out. Ran easy out/back to BU bridge. Legs felt pretty decent out the door. Just need to hang onto this for another 2 weeks! Drills, 4x strides in 1’19. Jogged home. Total run 6km in 25’.

XT: Heel drops, toes.
