Lunes, 18 de Junio, 2018 – 8am: Easy run w/ Calvin. Ran out/back on Taray Rd to 6km out. Lovely cloudless morning. Started around 4’40 and mostly 4’10-20s. Came back and then ran over to the strides road. Stopped and did 4x strides on the new strides rd (perpendicular to the old one) as it’s way less trafficy. Finished easy around town. Total run 14km in 61’.
XT: Toes
PM: OFF – busy day
Martes, 19 de Junio, 2018 – 8am: Same exact run as yesterday. Felt better but still ran about the same pace. Out/back 6km and then over to the strides road. 4x strides and back for 14km in 61’.
XT: Toes
4pm: Ran solo on rage after a challenging personal afternoon. 3’48, 3’35, 3’45, 3’31, 3’31 to 5K in 18’10 at the strides road. Stopped and did 4x strides and then easy home. Total run 6km in 21’30.
XT: 8’ abs video that Katie chose which is basically just 8’ of crunches. Jesus.
Miercoles, 20 de Junio – Sparknotes: 11.3km prog run 43’44 (3’51 avg) w/ last 5km 17’18. Accelerating every km – great!
07:30am: First bridge loop w/ Calvin. Wanted to take it easy all the way to the bridge and did that running 4’30 first km and then 4’11 x3, 4’07 to 5km in 21’10 feeling very relaxed and conversational. Stopped at the bridge for a quick pee break and then ran over. Hit the pavement almost exactly at 6km (4’02 – 25’12) and then really accelerated. Surprised to run so quick especially w/ uphill first km on the road but hit 3’32 and Cal was right there sounding fine, so maintained that (3’30) and then even the big uphill from 8-9km ran in 3’31 which is very good running.
Topped out and picked it up a tiny bit coming down the hill back into town. 3’24 to 10K (39’09) and then 3’21 after the last little hill to the orange bridge. Cal wanted to finish out 7M, so we ran another minute or so at 3’22/km coming into main street and dodging a bunch of traffic.
Stopped and walked/jogged over to the stride road. Did 4x good strides and then jogged longer cooldown around tambo loop.
Really nice first faster session and great that Cal felt reasonable at this pace. This is probably comparable to where we were at the END of last summer, so great to be here already on day 9 or something.
NB – ran in Cavus which I’m really starting to like.
Total run 15km in 61’.

5pm: Ran solo out/back on river rd. Felt really good surprisingly and was running quicker than I’d expected, 4’17 first km and then down to 3’50 last. Stopped and did 4x strides including some photo shoot w/ mar for tomorrow’s Clifton 5 launch. Beautiful evening. Total run 6km in 24’.
XT: Toes
Jueves, 21 de Junio, 2018 – 7am: Ran earlier to skew day so we could watch Peru’s mundial game. Ran w/ Calvin and Will out/back on Taray Rd. Ran 4’40s down to one 4’23 3rd km but Will was struggling so we stopped at 5km (23’0x) and took a breather and then headed back slower (24’ back). Felt a bit awkward to run this slow which is surprising as in the past this would have been a pretty normal run for us. Definitely running faster on my normal runs this block. Will be interesting to see if that stays once I start running a bit more and once I start doing more structured running. Dropped Will off after 10km in 47’ and then jogged over to stride road, did 4x strides, and tacked on around the Tambo Loop. Total run 14km++ in 64’.
5pm: Easy run w/ Sierra on River Rd. out/back. Nice conversational run. Good to spend some time w/ Sierra as she’s the one I’ve talked to least. Lovely afternoon. No strides. Total run 8km in 39’.
Viernes, 22 de Junio, 2018 – Sparknotes: 10km easy + 8x short hills.
7:15am: Ran w/ Calvin easy out/back on Taray Rd. Felt a bit off at first – some diarrhea this morning – but felt pretty good after a few km. Almost a disaster as Calvin stashed the HOKA 119 flats on the side of the road and we came back and they were gone! Luckily, the bub had just tossed them a few feet down the road. Thank goodness.
Got to the hill for 10km @ 4’19 avg and then did drills, strides. And 8x short hills. Recovery was ample. 3-5’. Ran the first 4x from standing start and the last 4x from jogging start. Felt pretty good on these. Glad to be getting back into a rhythm w/ them.
Finished w/ easy jog back to the market w/ Scott and Calvin very slow.
Total run 13km- in 58’.
5pm: Easy run solo out/back on river rd. Ran quicker w/ no leftovers from the morning. Felt quite good and ran from 4’20s down to 3’50s easily. Had to stop for cow crossing just once. Finished w/ 4x strides and into town. Total run 8km in 33’.
Sabado, 23 de Junio, 2018 – Sparknotes: 38km in 2’31’45 (3’59) w/ last 9km @ 3’46
7:40am: Ran solo out/back on river rd to start w/ 5km in 19’ (4’15->3’45). Picked up Calvin and Katie (on bike) and headed back out the same way on Big Black Llama! Nice to have Katie w/ some tunes and company and good conversational run for most of the big loop. Ran under 4’20/km the whole way and more like 4’10s on the way out and then 4’0x on the way back once we hit the pavement around 12km into the loop (~17km total for me). Didn’t feel super but nice to have company and hung in all the way back to the bridge and then to the strides rd where Calvin finished up around 3’45/km at the end.
I then headed back out w/ Katie towards Taray for about 35 more minutes. Felt really good at the start and was running 3’35-40 for the first few km but might have been a bit too aggressive as I didn’t maintain that overall. Had a couple slower km around 4’00 and then finished 3’41 down the woof gauntlet.
Overall a very strong run. A harder course for sure (not net downhill) and ran faster overall and 30 minutes longer (a pretty big jump). Quite tired by the end of this one.
Also, NB, took 2 gels around 45’ and 1h45 if I remember correctly.
Total run 38km+ in 2h32.
4:30pm: Easy shakeout solo on river rd. Pretty tired but better once I got moving. 4’50->4’30s. Stopped and did 4x strides very relaxed. Total run 6km in 27’.
Domingo, 24 de Junio, 2018 – 25km (10h40) hike up to 4812m.
6:00am. Left the house at 05:30 and drive up above Huatta to start the Pachatusan traverse. Perfect morning. Some fog in the valley but super clear up high. Started just above the town (3700m) and hiked up on a decent trail up the ridge until we hit the sun after about 90 minutes climbing up to 4300m. Stopped for a nice breakfast up there and then continued along the ridge, up and down, for another couple hours until we reached the saddle between Pachatusan and whatever mountain we were technically on.
Much to our relief, there was a great and super well marked trail going down from here to the river below. The descent was the part I was most worried about as it was very hard to tell where we could go down via google earth.
Stopped and had a nice snack and then scooted up to what we thought was the summit. Followed a trail along the ridge and then around to the north face and up an increasingly steep grassy face which required some hands and feet action at times as it was so steep. Finally made it to a little rocky face and some fun scrambling up to the first of many false summits. We could see (what we thought was) the real summit looking quite far to the east and decided to head towards it.
So, we followed the ridge and then down to traverse along the south edge of the ridge until we got to a pretty filthy soft dirt/scree field which triggered Calvin enough that he and Mar decided to head back to the descent point, while the girls and I headed on.
We continued back up to the ridge and shot for a middle summit w/ a cell phone tower on it. We made it up quickly and could see what looked like the real summit and (according to GPS) were only about 150 ft vertical below the summit. I gave them a hard turn-around time of 13:45 and so we decided to go as far as we could.
We scootched around a couple scary little canyons with a few hundred vertical feet of rocky cliffs straight down and then found ourselves heading up a steep notch and were on the south face of the final summit push. A tiny bit of snow there but easy scrambling up a small rock face and then up to the summit.
Except – wait – it’s STILL not the real summit! A final false summit and we ditched our packs with just a few minutes to spare and basically jogged up the final little crest until we finally stood on the true summit. The phone altimeter read 15,850 but the GPS would later confirm 4812m (15,787) which lines up w/ what I’d heard. A very quick selfie and then we headed down.
A very steep descent through the same notch and then down a steep scree field to the grassy field about 500m below where we found a trail which led us back quite flat to the point where we met Mar and Cal. We were booking it here to make it back in time so they wouldn’t worry about us and so were pretty worked when we arrived there.
From there, it was a very good but steep downhill trail all the way to the church Senor de Huanca. We descended about 1200m in about 5km. Pretty wrecked by the time we got there and very glad to have Hector there waiting to take us back! Quite tired from this and the long run yesterday.
Total time was 10h40 including stops and about 25km covered according to the garmin.
Great dinner at the polleria and passed out by 8pm.
