Jambo from Africa! My name is Michael and I am the Head Group Leader for STRIVE-Kenya. I wanted to take a moment to welcome everyone who will be traveling to Kenya (Karibu sana!!) and also wish you a very safe journey (Safari njema!!). It is my pleasure to welcome you to God’s Place, as Kenya has been called since Europeans first arrived here. I am excited to be making my fifth trip to Kenya and my seventh to the African continent. I truly have a passion for exploring Africa and meeting and learning from its people and I hope to pass this down to the lucky students who have chosen to spend a summer with us. I will be meeting all the students at the airport on Saturday with my partner Liz and we will be excited to meet everyone. As we go through this journey together I will be posting updates to this blog so please check back often. We will also ask the students to post some thoughts about their journey through Africa. I am very excited to hear their perspectives on all of the unique features that make Africa special. I had a friend once who traveled to Africa and encountered an old missionary couple that had been here for decades. This old missionary couple asked my friend to walk around their village and take pictures of whatever they thought was interesting. They explained that my friend had “new eyes” and the older missionary couple wanted to experience Africa all over again because they had become too accustomed to it. That is what I am looking forward to the most out of this trip – experiencing all the wonders of Africa through “new eyes”.
Before I leave I wanted to post a few pictures of some travel I have had the opportunity to do this week with my family. Hopefully this whets your appetite for the adventures to come!! Asante sana!!
